2012 Tour de Palm Springs

Tour de Palm Springs photo

The 14th annual Tour de Palm Springs took place on Feb. 10 - 11. This charity event, which can draw up to 8,000 riders, supports numerous charities throughout the Coachella Valley. It has rides for all members of the family, starting with the 5 Mile loop that passes former homes of the likes of Clark Gable, Elvis Presley, Jack Benny and Goldie Hawn. The 10 Mile ride takes a break at the Palms Springs Air Museum, home of over 30 WWII aircraft, most in flying condition. The 25, 56 and 100 Mile rides take you through other communities in the Coachella Valley.

Charity pledges are not required, each ride is a fixed fee. This is not a race and riders are sent out at staggered intervals. The longer rides have SAG (Stop And Go) stops where there will be refreshments.

Cycle Fest

The inaugural Cycle-Fest was held in September at the Empire Polo Club. It included a Century, Metric Century and a 20 mile ride. This two-day event also had a cyclocross race, relay race, bike swap and live entertainment. SAGs and hydration stations were supported by local restaurants and beverage companies.

The event was sponsored by the Desert Recreation District and supported the Trips for Kids and Coachella Valley Volunteers in Medicine charities.

It appears that there will be no 2012 event. The Palm Desert Century has announced that the Desert Recreation District is participating in their event and that Trips for Kids is the offical charity for 2012.
